News release from the TinCaps:
TinCaps blank Kernels, 1-0
(July 20, 2013) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 1-0, Saturday night in the opener of their three-game series at Parkview Field. Bryan Rodriguez tossed seven innings en route to this first win since June 6th, and Diego Goris knocked in the game’s only run on a sixth-inning groundout.
Fort Wayne (11-17, 54-43) found little offensive success in the early innings against Cedar Rapids (19-9, 59-37) starter Tim Atherton (5-3). He scattered five hits over seven innings, while striking out a season-high nine and he did not issue a walk. Through five innings he had allowed just three base hits. But in the fifth inning, Mallex Smith reached on a one-out bunt, which was followed by a bloop single by Corey Adamson. On a wild pitch, Smith advanced to third and Adamson scampered to second base. Smith later scored on a groundout to third base by Goris.
Rodriguez turned in a career-high-tying seven innings, allowing six hits, walking three and striking out a season-high five batters. His outing marked just the fifth time this season that a TinCaps starting pitcher has gone seven innings. With Rodriguez on the hill, only one Cedar Rapids baserunner reached third base, and that happened in the sixth inning.
The Kernels threatened against Fort Wayne closer Roman Madrid in the ninth inning by loading the bases with two outs. Trevor Gott was summoned from the bullpen to face Adam Brett Walker II, who leads the league in both home runs (20) and runs batted in (83). Gott threw one pitch, induced a groundout to third, and earned his first save of the season.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM. The scheduled starters are Joe Ross for the TinCaps and Mason Melotakis for the Kernels. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
