Padres Promote Fort Wayne Alum Hynes
Former Fort Wayne Pitcher Makes MLB Debut(July 15, 2013) – The number of 2009 TinCaps to have played in the majors swelled to 11 Sunday, as left-handed pitcher Colt Hynes made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres. The overall tally of Fort Wayne alums to have appeared at the game’s highest level is now 117.
Hynes pitched a perfect ninth inning in San Diego’s 10-1 win against San Francisco. His debut with the Padres came six years after he was selected by the organization in the 31st round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
Hynes spent all of 2008 and part of 2009 in Fort Wayne. The now-28-year old reliever from Oklahoma City, OK, went 0-2 as a Wizard in ’08 with a 4.60 ERA in 32 relief appearances. As a TinCap in ’09, Hynes was 2-0 out of the bullpen with a 1.62 ERA. The Texas Tech product was promoted to Advanced-A Lake Elsinore in May 2009.
Following his time in Fort Wayne, Hynes split 2010 between Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio. In 2011, he pitched for both San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson. Last year, Hynes was exclusively in Triple-A. This season, Hynes started back in Double-A, where his ERA stood at 0.73 through 12 1/3 innings. He then returned to Tucson, where in 35 innings, Hynes’ ERA was 1.80 with 42 strikeouts.
Hynes joins the company of Mat Latos, Blake Tekotte, Anthony Bass, James Darnell, Andy Parrino, Brad Bach, Ali Solis, Erik Davis, Jaff Decker, and Simon Castro as 2009 TinCaps who have reached the big leagues.
Previously this year, former TinCaps Jedd Gyorko (San Diego), Nate Freiman (Oakland), Davis (Washington), Decker (San Diego), and Castro (Chicago White Sox) also made their major league debuts.
