TinCaps’ Momentum Halted by Loons

(July 7, 2013) – The TinCaps’ two-game winning streak came to an end Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field, as the Great Lakes Loons beat Fort Wayne, 8-4. The TinCaps fell behind 5-0 and despite a 13-hit attack, never pulled within closer than four runs.

The turning point of the game may have come in the bottom of the first inning. With Corey Adamson at second base and Maxx Tissenbaum at first with no outs, Diego Goris hit a fly ball to center field that was ruled to have hit off the wall just below the yellow line that designates a home run. The questionable call resulted in both Adamson and Tissenbaum standing on third. Rather than it being a three-run homer for Goris, Tissenbaum was tagged out at third. Chris Burke then struck out and Adamson was picked off third base to end the inning without any runs.

Great Lakes (13-5, 40-48), meanwhile, scored in the top of the second inning without needing a hit. After two walks and a sacrifice bunt, Jeremy Rathjen hit a grounder to third to score Aaron Miller for the game’s first run. The Loons scored off TinCaps starter Joe Ross (3-4) again in the third inning as Corey Seager and Tyler Ogle hit back-to-back doubles. Ross was taken out of the game in the fourth following RBI hits by Rathjen and Jose Capellan that made it 4-0.

Down 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Fort Wayne (5-12, 48-38) finally got on the board. Tyler Stubblefield doubled with two outs and came home on a Rodney Daal single past third base. But the Loons answered with another in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take control at 8-1. On the mound for the Loons, Miguel Sulbaran (5-2) scattered six hits across six innings while striking out six and allowing the lone run.

The TinCaps mounted a meager rally by scoring once in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively, against the Great Lakes bullpen. Tyler Stubblefield, Brian Adams, and Tissenbaum each collected an RBI for the TinCaps.

Fort Wayne and Great Lakes conclude their three-game series at Parkview Field Monday night at 7:05. Walker Weickel will look to get the TinCaps back on track against the Loons’ Brandon Martinez in a faceoff of righties. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com, and seen on XFINITY Channel 81.
