Goris Delivers Walk-Off Hit in 11th

(June 21, 2013) – The TinCaps pulled out a dramatic, walk-off win at Parkview Field for the eighth time this season, as Fort Wayne beat the South Bend Silver Hawks, 3-2, in 11 innings Friday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 7,911. Diego Goris gave the TinCaps the victory with an RBI-double to score Alberth Martinez.

Martinez began the bottom of the 11th inning with a single straight up the middle against South Bend reliever Enrique Burgos. Maxx Tissenbaum then moved Martinez into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt down the third-base line. The right-handed batting Goris, who was 0-for-4 to start the game, grounded the first pitch he saw down the first-base line, just passed the glove of Silver Hawks first baseman Carter Bell. The ball tumbled to right field, allowing Martinez to score the winning run without a throw. Fort Wayne’s players emerged from their dugout to chase after Goris and mob him in shallow left field.

With the RBI-double, Goris became the first TinCap this season to provide two walk-off hits. The Dominican Republic-raised utility player, who manned third base Friday night, also had a game-winning hit for the TinCaps on May 28 in a 10-inning victory against the Lansing Lugnuts.

Fort Wayne left-handed reliever Chris Nunn earned credit for his team-leading sixth win after twirling a scoreless frame in the top of the eleventh. Nunn’s work capped off six shutout innings by the TinCaps’ bullpen. Before Nunn, Matthew Shepherd tossed the sixth and seventh, while Leonel Campos worked the eighth, and Roman Madrid handled the ninth and 10th.

TinCaps starter Zach Eflin left after five innings with the game tied, 2-2. Eflin allowed a solo home run to Silver Hawks designated hitter Rudy Flores in the second for the game’s first run. Otherwise, South Bend managed just one more run in the fourth inning, as left fielder Alex Glenn plated Flores with a single in the fourth to tie the game at the time, 2-2. In his five frames, Eflin limited the Silver Hawks to the two runs on five hits, while walking two and striking out five.

Dueling on the other side, South Bend’s Brad Allen started and lasted six innings. Allen also allowed two runs on five hits. Fort Wayne tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the second on a solo home run off the bat of Tyler Stubblefield. The shortstop, who played for the TinCaps in 2011 and 2012, just joined the ballclub yesterday. It was his first home run in a Fort Wayne uniform since July 31 of last year, coincidentally, at South Bend.

The TinCaps took their first lead in the home third inning. Right fielder Brian Adams led off with a double, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by the center fielder Martinez.

Fort Wayne improved to 6-0 in extra-inning affairs this season. Meanwhile, it was the first win for the TinCaps against the Silver Hawks in eight games.

After two straight sell-outs, Fort Wayne and South Bend conclude their three-game series at Parkview Field on Saturday night at 7:05. Left-hander Max Fried (2-1, 3.62) is slated to start for the TinCaps against fellow southpaw Daniel Watts (8-3, 3.74) for the Silver Hawks. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
