TinCaps Win Fifth Straight, Sweep Lugnuts

The Fort Wayne TinCaps picked up their fifth straight win, a 7-4 victory Thursday night, completing a three-game sweep over the Lansing Lugnuts at Parkview Field. The win, bolstered by 11 hits, propelled the TinCaps into a one-half game lead over Bowling Green for the wild card playoff spot in the second half.

Lansing (21-29) scored the game’s first run, scoring against Fort Wayne (30-22) starter Bryan Rodriguez in the top of the first inning. Rodriguez, making his first start in place of the injured Ruben Mejia, retired the first two batters of the game before an error by third baseman Chris Burke allowed Christian Lopes to reach. Lopes then scored on an RBI single by Kevin Patterson.

In the second inning, the TinCaps started a string of five straight innings in which they scored at least one run. Burke and Diego Goris plated runs against starter Javier Avendano, who exited after only three innings. Mallex Smith and Corey Adamson each hit home runs, helping Fort Wayne to a 7-4 lead after six innings.

Joe Church (1-0), Michael Kelly and Leonel Campos each pitched in relief for the TinCaps, with Campos picking up his second save of the year, tossing two scoreless frames. Lansing reliever Griffin Murphy (0-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up two runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Fort Wayne will try to stretch its winning streak to a season-best-tying six games Friday night when West Michigan comes to town for the beginning of a four-game series. The scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for the TinCaps and Jake Thompson for the Whitecaps. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
