Eflin Excels in Fort Wayne’s Fourth Straight Win

(May 29, 2013) – The TinCaps extended their winning streak to four games Wednesday night at Parkview Field, as Fort Wayne trounced the Lansing Lugnuts, 7-1. TinCaps starting pitcher Zach Eflin earned the win, throwing seven scoreless innings.

Eflin (2-4) twirled a scoreless top of the first inning and then, for the fifth game in a row, the TinCaps scored a first-inning run. Left fielder Alberth Martinez unleashed his fourth home run of the season, a towering shot to left field that caromed off The Harrison and gave Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead against Lansing left-hander Daniel Norris (0-4).

With Eflin dealing on the mound, the TinCaps added a run in the third and another in the seventh, when Brian Adams scored on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Carmon to go up, 3-0.

Eflin, 19, exited the game after the seven innings, making it the longest outing of his young professional career. The central Florida native scattered six hits, while striking out six and not walking a batter. Eflin has fanned at least six batters in each of his last three starts.

Although Fort Wayne (29-22) reliever Michael Kelly surrendered a run in the top of the eighth, the TinCaps’ bats came alive in the bottom of the frame, erupting for four runs off Lansing (21-28) reliever Kramer Champlin. Adams and Carmon both produced RBI-singles while Rodney Daal brought two home with a single, too.

The TinCaps, who improved to 5-0 against the Lugnuts on the season, are now only one-half game behind the Bowling Green Hot Rods in the Eastern Division’s wild card standings.

Fort Wayne and Lansing finish their three-game series at Parkview Field on Thursday night at 7:05. Bryan Rodriguez makes his debut as a starter for the TinCaps against the Lugnuts’ Javier Avendano. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com, and viewed on XFINITY Channel 81.
