Goris Delivers in Extra-Innings Thriller

(May 28, 2013) – Redemption was the word Tuesday night at Parkview Field, as the TinCaps scored a come-from-behind win over the Lansing Lugnuts, 6-5, in 10 innings. Third baseman Diego Goris committed an error that led to a Lansing run in the top of the 10th inning, and then delivered a walk-off two-run hit to win the game for Fort Wayne.

The TinCaps opened the scoring in the fourth of 16 games in the season series between these two teams, as Jeremy Baltz knocked in Mallex Smith in the bottom of the first inning. Lansing (21-27) connected for three runs in the top of the second inning, grabbing a two-run lead against Fort Wayne (28-22) starter Justin Hancock. The Defiance, Ohio, native allowed four runs (three earned) over five innings.

Following the fruitful first, the TinCaps failed to get a runner to third base until the sixth inning, and did not score again until the eighth. Trailing 4-1, Fort Wayne tied the game with a three-run inning. Smith started the scoring with a double, and Jeremy Baltz and Dane Phillips hit back-to-back run-scoring singles to tie the game.

The game went to extras, where the TinCaps are now a perfect 3-0 this season, tied at four, but the even tally was broken in the top of the 10th. Reliever Chris Nunn (4-0) was working in a two-out situation with runners at first and second, when Carlos Ramirez hit a ground ball to third base. The ball eluded the reach of Goris, and it allowed Dwight Smith, Jr. to score the go-ahead run, making it 5-4.

In the bottom of the inning, Lugnuts reliever Justin Jackson (0-1) retired Smith and Maxx Tissenbaum on ground balls. Jeremy Baltz reached base on an error by shortstop Jorge Flores, and Dane Philips followed with a single. Goris launched a fly ball off the wall in right field, scoring pinch runner Alberth Martinez, who had come on to replace Baltz, and Phillips, to win the game. It was the fifth walk-off win of the year for Fort Wayne, and the third consecutive victory.

Wednesday’s game is scheduled for a 7:05 PM start at Parkview Field, with Fort Wayne’s Zach Eflin scheduled to start against Lansing’s Daniel Norris. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
