Errors Cost TinCaps in 3-2 Loss

(May 18, 2013) Eastlake, OH – Three costly errors proved the difference for the Fort Wayne TinCaps Saturday night as they were defeated, 3-2, by the Lake County Captains at Classic Park. With the loss, the four-game series is now even at one game each.

Lake County (14-25) won for just the second time in the last seven games, and it started the scoring with a run in the first inning. With one out, Captains shortstop Dorssys Paulino hit a pop-up to shortstop Stephen Carmon, who dropped the ball. Two batters later, cleanup hitter Richard Stock stroked a double to center field, scoring Paulino.

The Captains took a 2-0 lead over Fort Wayne (24-16) in the second when Jorge Martinez came to the plate. The left fielder hit a line drive to the gap in right-center, which slipped between Brian Adams and Corey Adamson and rolled to the wall. Martinez was ticketed for third, but the relay throw from second baseman Diego Goris eluded third baseman Gabriel Quintana and pitcher Ruben Mejia, and it clanged off the back of the Fort Wayne dugout, being ruled a dead ball. Martinez was automatically awarded home plate, and Goris was charged with his fourth error of the year.

Fort Wayne’s two runs scored in the fourth inning against Captains starter Ryan Merritt (2-3). Jeremy Baltz led off with a triple, and scored two batters later when Luis Tejada hit a triple of his own. Tejada came home on a groundout by Goris, helping the TinCaps tie the game, 2-2.

There was no waiting for Lake County when it came to scoring again. The Captains’ Leonardo Castillo singled to lead off the fifth against Mejia (2-4), who worked five innings, allowing three runs (one earned). Two batters later, Erik Gonzalez doubled on a line drive to right field. The throw in from Adamson in right did not reach a cutoff man, and Castillo scampered home from third, scoring the game’s final run. Adamson was charged with a throwing error on the play.

The TinCaps stranded a season-low two men on base and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Fort Wayne drops to 9-6 in one-run games.

The TinCaps will try to take the lead in the four-game set tomorrow afternoon, when first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 at Classic Park. The scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for Fort Wayne and Michael Peoples for the Captains. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
