TinCaps clip Dragons in series opener

(May 11, 2013) Dayton, OH – It took Zach Eflin six tries, but Saturday night in Dayton, Ohio, pitching in front of the biggest crowd of his life, he earned his first professional win, as Fort Wayne defeated Dayton, 5-3. The victory was the fourth in a row for the TinCaps, marking their longest winning streak of the season.

Eflin (1-3) allowed a leadoff homer to Zach Vincej (VIN-see) in the bottom of the first inning, and then went on a tear, retiring the next 13 batters in a row. Dayton (12-22) did not have another baserunner until Eflin hit Junior Arias with a pitch in the fifth inning.

The Fort Wayne (20-13) offense was bolstered by home runs from Brian Adams, who hit one in the fifth inning, and Dane Phillips, who went yard in the eighth inning. Despite falling behind 1-0 in the first, the TinCaps did not trail for the remainder of the night. They attacked Dragons starter Drew Cisco (2-3) who gave up three runs, two earned over his six innings.

At the end of six innings, Fort Wayne led 3-2, but the TinCaps scored single runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to stretch the advantage to three runs, and eventually hung on for the victory.

Fort Wayne, in addition to being on a four-game winning streak, is also eight games above the .500 mark, which is its best record this year.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The scheduled starters are Ruben Mejia for Fort Wayne and Sal Romano for Dayton. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
