May activities scheduled at Science Central
New logo to be unveiled on May 15th(May 2, 2013) – Science Central, the region’s premier gateway for informal science education, has slated the following activities for the month of May 2013:
Now through Sunday, September 8 – “Wild Minds – What Animals Really Think” Traveling Exhibition
Have you ever wondered what your dog was thinking? Visit Science Central to see the latest traveling exhibition, Wild Minds: What Animals Really Think and you’ll get some great insights about what’s going on in Fido’s brain. Wild Minds demonstrates just how bright our friends in the animal kingdom can be. You’ll learn about animals’ cognitive skills long thought to make human beings unique: using tools, solving problems, self-awareness, and the ability to communicate. By using a variety of videos, games and displays, you’ll learn about how animals’ environments have shaped their thinking abilities.
This world-class exhibit was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, and was developed in cooperation with the Columbus Zoo and COSI; Staten Island Zoo and the New York Hall of Science; Portland Zoo and Oregon Museum of Science & Industry; Santa Barbara Zoo and the California Science Center; and Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo and Science Central.
Thursday, May 9 – Afternoon Science/Physics 2-4 p.m.
Afternoon Science programs offer homeschool students an opportunity to spend an afternoon together participating in a scientific lab, a demonstration, and exploring the Science Central exhibits. May’s focus is on Physics, with a demonstration on Amazing Air Pressure. Ages 5-8 will participate in Gravity Takes a Fall Lab; ages 9-12 will participate in Newton Cars Lab; Ages 13-16 will participate in Radioactivity Lab. Check-In time is 1:30 to 1:45 pm., Program time is 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $6 per student for the lab and demo, admission is $4* per non-member (*participating and non-participating children and adults), and is free for members. Reduced admission starts at 1 p.m. for Afternoon Science. You can register at www.sciencecentral.org.
Saturday, May 11 – Lunch with an IPFW Scientist, 11 am-12:30 pm
If creatures that slither and hiss are your passion, then you won’t want to miss this month’s Lunch with an IPFW Scientist. Bruce Kingsbury will focus on Reptile Research, sharing his insights on snakes and the research he’s conducted. He’ll provide some interesting examples from his team’s efforts to learn about snakes, plus share some other snake stories along the way. Participants will receive a Snakes of Indiana book. Pre-registration is required; members’ cost is $10 per person, and includes lunch; non-members cost is $16 per person with lunch. Please register at www.sciencecentral.org.
Wednesday, May 15 – Science Central Logo Unveiling & Launch, 10:30 a.m.
After more than 10 years of using its current logo, Science Central will unveil a new logo to the media and public on Wednesday, May 15, 10:30 a.m. at Science Central. The public is invited to attend the event, which will feature Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, City Councilman Tom Didier, Science Central Executive Director Martin Fisher, and other local dignitaries. In true Science Central fashion, the unveiling will feature a very visual scientific demonstration. Free admission to Science Central will be offered from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for the unveiling ceremony.
Wednesday, May 15 – Half-Pint Science, 1 pm-2:30 pm
Little ones love our Half-Pint Science activities. On May 15th, we’ll have a Bubble Festival, discovering the joy of iridescence, surface tension, buoyancy, and shape of bubbles! We will have a lot of squeaky clean fun painting bubble pictures, making body bubbles, and discovering the iridescent colors in bubbles. These activities are targeted for kids 2-5, with their designated adult. Come explore the world of hands-on science with a kids-eye view. Cost is $12/non-members, $8/member for 1 child with 1 adult. Additional children and/or adults are $6/non-members, $4/members. This cost includes admission to Science Central during the program.
Saturday, May 25 – Last Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm
Enjoy half-price admission to Science Central as part of the Downtown Improvement District’s Last Saturday event on May 25th!
