News release from the University of Saint Francis:

USF Wellness Committee hosting Focus on Health

(April 15, 2013) – The North Campus at the University of Saint Francis will serve as a Focus on Health site on Friday, April 19 from 8 a.m.-noon at 2702 Spring St. Focus on Health will take place city-wide from April 17-28 to provide free health screenings and reduced-fee medical tests in an effort to expand health awareness in the community.

USF has provided a Focus on Health site for seven years, and offers a broad range of services through its healthcare education staff and students. The effort is part of the university’s Wellness Committee initiatives through the School of Health Sciences (SOHS). The Department of Psychology and the Department of Exercise Science and Health also help with the event.

Each site will provide a blood chemistry profile, in addition to blood tests for hemoglobin, A1C glucose average (for diabetes), thyroid, prostate and Vitamin D levels. A nominal fee will be charged for blood tests. Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography will be on site to provide annual mammograms for a fee. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 483-1847.

Free health checks, including blood pressure, vision, height/weight/BMI (body mass index), bone density, hearing and colorectal cancer screening kits are available at all sites. Other USF-specific tests include blood flow to the legs, balance and flexibility, oral health and foot and skin abnormalities. The Department of Exercise Science will offer some simple strength and fitness testing and provide information on home exercise programs. Physical Therapist Assistant students will provide 5-10 minute massages.

Various organizations will staff displays and provide educational materials as well. Highlights this year will include “Ask a Pharmacist” and “Ask a Dietitian.” A variety of health professionals and students will share their expertise on heart health, diabetes education, blood pressure, exercise and falls. Mental health providers will offer materials and information on Alzheimer’s disease, brain injury, depression, anxiety and stress. The Drug and Alcohol Consortium will give information on the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol on the body.

SOHS and other USF students will assist the many exhibitors to educate on health and wellness. Faculty members and nurse practitioners will provide health summary reviews and resource referrals after the screenings.

Door prizes will be given away to participants at regular intervals throughout the event.
