Local Business Pitches in for Spring Cleaning on Indiana Highways this Week
Adopt-A-Highway Group Picks up Litter on SR 14 and US 33

(April 8, 2013) – Throughout Indiana this April, volunteers are strapping on safety vests and getting their hands dirty. They are picking up trash along state roads and U.S. highways as part of Trash Bash – the month-long kickoff for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Adopt-A-Highway program.

last Tuesday, April 9, volunteers from BVZ Painting in Fort Wayne were doing their part by cleaning the state’s right-of-way along SR 14, from Hadley Road to Scott Road. On Wednesday, April 10, BVZ Painting volunteers were cleaning along US 33 from the Allen County line to Felger Road.

In 2012, 15,812 bags of trash were collected from state highways and right-of-way areas.

INDOT encourages all Hoosiers to keep Indiana’s highways clean by following these simple tips:

  • Don’t litter: Set a good example for everyone, especially children.
  • Be responsible: Carry a litter bag in your car instead of tossing trash out the window.
  • Report it: Report areas where people have illegally dumped garbage to your local transportation, public works or conservation office.
  • Adopt it: To find out how your group can become involved in helping beautify an area near you by participating in Adopt-A-Highway, Sponsor-A-Highway or other highway beautification efforts please contact our Customer Service Department at (260) 484-9541 or 1-866-227-3555.
