News release from the Fort Wayne Dance Collective:

Keigwin + Company

(April 10, 2013) – Since 1989, the Fort Wayne Dance Collective has presented a special guest artist residency for Fort Wayne audiences. This year, Fort Wayne Dance Collective proudly presents Keigwin + Company from New York City for a one night only performance Saturday, April 13, 2013, 8 p.m. at the Arts United Center. Artistic Director, Larry Keigwin’s choreography has been described as everything from “formalism” to “pop.” He aims to entertain to a wide range of viewers creating very abstract modern pieces to more playful pieces that all audiences can relate to. The repertory program will include the following dances: Love Songs is a romantic series of playful duets that reflect various stages of love set to the music by Roy Orbison, Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone.

Boys is a quartet of male dancers in gray flannel short pants and white shirts, set to a suite of Eartha Kitt songs. The dancers interact like siblings and is based Keigwin’s own childhood history with his brothers where he always felt like the “odd man out.” Strong, fluid, playful and tender, they weave together elements of lyrical dance, capoeira and gymnastics with hints of the Three Stooges.

A new work created as a companion piece, Girls is a trio of women set to Frank Sinatra songs. In gray flannels as well, their movements are simpler and less intertwined than the boys’, but the piece incorporates floor-to-ceiling rain curtains, strips of glittering mylar that catch the light spectacularly and provide a fun element for the dancers to interact with.

Another new work being presented is Seven, with relates to the number of dancers who move abstractly but with a unifying spirit and flow. Highlighting the pedestrian feel are city street noises behind a gentle acoustic guitar music that opens and closes the piece.

The piece, Triptych is based on classic triptychs of photography, Keigwin brings us an abstract dance that portrays the beauty of the human form with dancers costumed in sleek minimal black costumes. Triptych uses vigorous and precise movement set to the pulsing beat of electronic composer, Jonathan Pratt.

Following the performance, the audience is welcome to join the dancers for a Talkback in the Ian Rolland Gallery.

“One of Keigwin’s greatest gifts is for revealing the individuality of his champion dancers. He lets you see them, he allows you to love them.” – Deborah Jowitt, The Village Voice, 2009
