News release from the Fort Wayne Medical Society Alliance:
Cinderella Dress Day
Saturday, April 13, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Parkview Health Corporate Building
A project of the Fort Wayne Medical Society Alliance(April 11, 2013) – The magic of Cinderella Dress Day is disguised in the beautiful gowns, jewelry and primping. The true mission of the program is to provide young women with information that can save their lives and help them to make better Life Decisions during a critical time of development.
“A truly unique event for young ladies addressing important health issues and promoting a positive self image.” Mark A. Pierce, MD FAAP
The doors are open to any female high school student on Cinderella Dress Day, but our target recipients are those in greatest need. Each year, the ALLIANCE blankets the community with 20,000 fliers announcing the event. We also work with churches and social service agencies to spread the news throughout the county. Response has been amazing — over 2,200 dresses to young women.
Cinderella Dress Day will grow in 2013 as we move to a new location, enriching our educational program and including wraps, purses and jewelry for the occasion.
During February and March, our 12-year partner Peerless Cleaners has made it easy for anyone in the community to drop off gently used or new dresses, purses or wraps to any Peerless location where they are sorted and tidied for use. All sizes were welcomed and will be used.
On event day, we feed and manage a staff of over 60 volunteers who tend to every girl’s dream. Volunteers include: students from Ravenscroft to offer hairstyle suggestions; skilled seamstresses alter dresses to fit every body type; talented artisans providing handmade jewelry to complement each ensemble.
Our educational outreach that day includes: information on Don’t Text and Drive, Nutritional Health, Healthy Eating on a Budget, Importance of Exercise and Body Image, Gardisil Vaccination and STD Prevention
