New parking fees, fines to take effect tomorrow

News release from the City of Fort Wayne:

New parking fees, fines to take effect Monday

(April 5, 2013) – The City of Fort Wayne’s downtown metered parking rates will increase from 25 cents an hour to 50 cents an hour beginning Monday, April 8. In addition, a new fine schedule for parking citations citywide will also take effect Monday.

The rate increase was approved by the Board of Public Safety and Fort Wayne City Council in recent weeks. The nearly 700 parking meters will be reprogrammed this weekend to reflect the new rates.

New downtown parking rates are the result of a comprehensive review of parking in downtown Fort Wayne.

At 50 cents an hour, Fort Wayne’s parking rate remains lower than other similar-sized cities, such as Toledo, Cleveland, Grand Rapids, and Lansing. Most of those cities charge 75 cents to $1 an hour for downtown metered parking.

Also, on Monday, the new fine schedule for parking citations will take effect. The fine for parking over the time limit at a metered space will increase from $5 to $10, with the fine increasing to $20 if the ticket is not paid within 30 days.

Among others, fines for parking in loading zones or in no parking certain hours zones will increase from $10 to $20, with the fine increasing to $40 after 30 days. The fine for illegally parking in a fire lane, in a handicapped space or having an operable vehicle parked in a yard will increase from $50 to $100, with the fine increasing to $150 after 30 days.
