IPFW Intern Initiates Book Drive to Benefit Elementary School Students
(March 28, 2013) – The Department of English and Linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) is pleased to announce it is partnering with the community to organize a “Read to Succeed Book Drive” service project to benefit the students of Washington Elementary School in Fort Wayne.
Throughout the month of April, students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to support the Read to Succeed campaign by donating new and gently used, age-appropriate books for students in preschool through fifth grade. In lieu of books, local businesses and individuals may contribute to this campaign by donating money. All funds received will be used toward the purchase of books.
Leah Thompson, an intern in the Department of English and Linguistics, spearheaded this service project under the direction of Associate Professor and Intern Mentor Suzanne Rumsey. “It has always been a passion of mine to give back to the community. When I was asked what projects I would be interested in completing during my internship, it
came without hesitation. My heart was telling me to conduct a book drive, and it’s only fitting, too; the mission of a book drive compliments everything we do here in the Department of English and Linguistics. We love to read, and, in turn, it is our desire to pass on the love and appreciation of literature to our local youth,” said Thompson.This will be the first service project done by an IPFW student intern in recent history. “We have so many groups at IPFW that could do so much good in our community. I was thrilled when Leah demonstrated an interest in a service project as part of her internship in the department. It’s a great idea and I am excited to be a part of it” said Rumsey.
The goal is to collect at least 100 books for the students of Washington Elementary School.
Books can be dropped off at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore inside Glenbrook Square Mall and on the IPFW campus in the Liberal Arts Building, Rooms 43 and 153. A list of suggested books can be found at my.barnesandnoble.com/Leah-Thompsons-WishList/cm/17362480
