April activities scheduled at Science Central
(April 1, 2013) – Science Central, the region’s premier gateway for informal science education, has slated the following activities for the month of April 2013:
Monday, April 1 – Sunday, April 7 – Spring Break at Science Central
If you aren’t taking off to find the sun, then “staycation” right here at Science Central! Escape for a few hours to our bright and sunny interior, and enjoy learning through hands-on fun! If you haven’t been here in a while, we’ve got new things for you to see. Check out our Transformation of Energy, Gears, Mist Machine and Tornado Simulator exhibits. We’ve been spiffing up and sprucing up to welcome our Spring Break campers and visitors.
You’ll also find a freshly-carpeted Kids Central, and many of your favorite exhibits like the High Rail Bike, Moonwalk, and Giant Slide are ready for your visit! And experience life at the beach by visiting the Tidal Pool, then hang out with Max the Chinchilla or Henry the King Snake. And don’t forget to pick up some great “staycation” souvenirs in our Gift Shop, where a big sale is now underway! Operating days and hours are extended for Spring Break. We’re open Monday-Saturday, April 1-6, 10 am-5 pm, and Sunday, April 7, Noon-5 pm.
Monday, April 1 – Sunday, April 7 – NanoDays
Think that the really, really small stuff doesn’t matter? You’ll find out otherwise during NanoDays at Science Central! We’re celebrating NanoDays as part of a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering. We’ll explore the miniscule world of atoms, molecules, and nanoscale forces. We have a range of exciting NanoDays programs throughout the week that demonstrate the special and unexpected properties found at the nanoscale, we’ll examine tools used by nanoscientists, and showcase nano materials with spectacular promise. You’ll explore how 3D images are made, investigate new nano products and materials, and imagine what the world might look like if we could build an elevator to space! Other activities include making bracelets that change color in the sun and science of invisibility cloaks!
Saturday, April 13 – Lunch with an IPFW Scientist, 11 am – 12:30 pm
Did you know that nature is the best mathematician? Here is a famous sequence of numbers to challenge you. Can you figure out what numbers complete this sequence? (1,1,2,3,5,8, _, _, _, _,…). For example, the counter-clockwise and clockwise spirals in a sunflower head are consecutive numbers in this sequence. So is the number of branches in a tree. Many more examples of nature’s math and hands-on activities will be part of our learning adventure with Peter Dragnev, IPFW Professor of Mathematics. Reserve your spot now! Cost is $10 for Science Central Members, or $16 for non-members, and includes lunch. Wednesday, April 17 – Half-Pint Science, 1 pm – 2:30 pm
Little ones love our Half-Pint Science activities. This month we’ll focus on Trains, Trucks and Trolleys, exploring the science of transportation. We’ll learn about trains, make a model truck, and much more as we roll along the track to science fun. These activities are targeted for kids 2-5, with their designated adult. Come explore the world of hands-on science with a kids-eye view. Cost is $12/non-members, $8/member for 1 child with 1 adult. Additional children and/or adults are $6/non-members, $4/members. This cost includes admission to Science Central during the program.
Friday, April 19 – Monday, September 9 – “Wild Minds – What Animals Really Think” Traveling Exhibition
On April 19, Science Central will unveil its latest traveling exhibition, Wild Minds: What Animals Really Think. This exhibition will demonstrate to visitors just how bright our friends in the animal kingdom can be. Many species demonstrate cognitive skills long thought to make human beings unique: using tools, solving problems, self-awareness, and the ability to communicate. Over decades, researchers have documented these talents in different animal species, observing behavior in the wild and in carefully controlled laboratory experiments. By using a variety of videos, games and displays, Wild Minds shows visitors how animals’ environments have shaped their thinking abilities and explores evolutionary links between humans and animals.
The exhibit, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, was developed in cooperation with Science Central and the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, along with four other zoo and science center partnerships from around the country.
Saturday, April 27 – Last Saturday & Lemonade Day Registration, 10 am-5 pm
Take advantage of half-price admission at Science Central as part of the Downtown Improvement District’s Last Saturday event. And, Lemonade Day organizers will be on hand to sign up kids for this year’s event, which provides children with the tools needed to learn how to run a small business.
