Holland Elementary School receives healthy school honor
(February 19, 2013) – Holland Elementary School has earned the Gold Award of Distinction in the HealthierUS School Challenge for establishing a healthier school environment through the promotion of nutrition and physical education.
Holland has participated in a variety of activities and healthy living initiatives in the last year, including a Dairy Carnival held last spring. With the help of Fort Wayne Community Schools’ Nutrition Services Department, students participated in a variety of educational games related to health and nutrition, including Calcium Twister, Got Milk? Mustaches, Dairy Putt-Putt and Milk on the Moove.
Holland was one of two schools in Indiana this year to receive the Gold Award of Distinction, the highest designation in the program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Of the 246 schools that took the challenge in 2011-12 only 18 received Gold of Distinction.
For its efforts, Holland receives $2,000 to spend as the school chooses and will use it to purchase equipment to use on the playground or during P.E.
