Commissioners Proclaim Feb. 14 “One Billion Rising Day”
Support local campaign to end violence against women

(February 8, 2013) — The Allen County Board of Commissioners has proclaimed February 14 “One Billion Rising Day” in support of a local event aimed at preventing violence against women and the treatment of survivors.

The commissioners presented the proclamation during today’s legislative session to organizers of One Billion Rising Fort Wayne.

The event is part of a global call to action to end violence against women by having residents come together at Parkview Field on February 14 at noon and dance in a show of solidarity. Also, information on local anti-violence resources will be handed out and donations will be solicited to benefit those resources.

In their proclamation, the commissioners said that “through this movement, our community is voicing its commitment to end violence against women and unite around love and respect for all.”

The proclamation also calls on all residents to “stand in solidarity with one billion others on our planet in sending the clear message that violence against women and girls is never acceptable.”
