USF social work program reaccredited for eight years
(Oct. 11, 2012) – The baccalaureate social work program at the University of Saint Francis (USF) has been reaccredited for eight years by the Commission on Accreditation (COA) of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
The COA made the determination after reviewing the USF Department of Social Work’s self-study report, making a site visit and analyzing the department’s response to the site visit report.
The CSWE uses the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) to accredit baccalaureate- and master’s-level social work programs. EPAS supports academic excellence by establishing thresholds for professional competence. It permits programs to use traditional and emerging curriculum models, balancing requirements to promote comparable programs and to allow differentiated program delivery.
The reaccreditation process ensures that programs continue to match education policies with accreditation standards, and that curriculum follows 10 core competencies.
To earn reaccreditation, programs must satisfy requirements in the areas of mission and goals, explicit curriculum, implicit curriculum and assessment. For its mission and goals standard, the USF Department of Social Work submitted a statement describing how its mission is consistent with the profession’s purpose and values and the program’s context. It also identified program goals and explained how those derived from the program’s mission.
“We are proud to meet the strict standards for CSWE reaccreditation,” said USF Social Work Department Chair and program director, Rebecca Coleman. “Only through directors’ continual work to refine education and heighten sensibilities can their programs do justice to social work’s high calling.”
