News release from the City of Fort Wayne:

Nighttime Trail Ride Looks to the Sky
“Trek the Trails” Ends Season with Traditional Stargaze

The popular series of community bike rides, “Trek the Trails,” will end the season with a spectacular night ride. The final ride on Tuesday October, 2, 2012 at 7:30 p.m., will offer a unique opportunity for riders to stargaze at Foster Park.

The City of Fort Wayne in conjunction with the Fort Wayne Astronomical Society and Fort Wayne Trails is sponsoring this free nighttime ride that will allow participants to get a close-up look at several star systems.

The 8-mile ride will start at the trailhead in Foster Park by Pavilion No. 1 (at the end of the main drive in Foster Park). The ride will go to Tillman Park and back. When riders return to the park they will stop at the Clubhouse, where members of the Astronomical Society will be stationed with several telescopes focused on constellations, stars and star clusters.

For the safety of all participants, bicyclists must have the following in order to participate in the ride:
[li]Front White Headlight[/li]
[li]Rear Red Reflector or Rear Red Flashing Light[/li]
[li]Helmet[/li]
Participants should wear light colored clothing, which is more visible at night.

This year marks the third year of the “Trek the Trails” community bike rides. The free rides exploring our trails continue to be popular and at times draw well over 100 riders.

Residents interested in the ride and needing more information should call 427-6002.
