4th Annual ACC Camp Theatre Production Allows Students to See the Poss-Abilities
The weekend of October 5-7 will hold many possibilities for the children who attend the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Fourth Annual Poss-Abilities Theatre Camp. The camp is designed so children who use AAC or augmentative/alternative communication devices can experience what it’s like to be in a live theatre production.
Sharon Egly, continuing lecturer and director of the departments’ clinic, said this is the largest camp they’ve had, with 10 campers from Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. “For some it is their first time, while others have been in all of the three previous plays. For some of the individuals, this may be the first time they have seen someone else using an AAC device. Parents have told us that after the play, their children have started communicating more with their devices. IPFW students in Communication Sciences and Disorders who act as counselors for this hands-on experience, the campers, and the parents have all reported that being at camp is a valuable experience.”
The culmination of the weekend camp is the performance of the play Stone Soup, which Egly adapted from the same story. “Our story is about a community in which the individual vegetable growers only ate the vegetable each one grew and wouldn’t share with others. They, of course develop health problems with the limited diet, and a doctor who has come to town helps by diagnosing each of them for a fee of each vegetable. He makes a soup and then shares it with the village. They change the name of the village from Woodenshire to Sharington and everyone is healed of their ills.”
The play will be presented at 5 p.m., Sunday, October 7, in Neff Hall, Room 101, with a reception immediately following. The production is free and open to the public.
