City Councilman Jehl’s statement and video on the permanent closure of North Anthony Kroger store

Statement from Fort Wayne City Councilman Russ Jehl (R-2nd):

Kroger announces closure of N. Anthony Scott’s

(August 17, 2012) – “I want to make sure that as the representative of the fine people and businesses that make up the 2nd District’s North Anthony neighborhood area, that the announcement just made by the Kroger Co. is one of regret for me and the residents who were served by the North Anthony Scotts store. While Kroger’s announcement to expand throughout the Fort Wayne area is an overall plus, the news of the permanent closing of the Scotts on North Anthony is unfortunate. The fact that the building will be torn down brings even greater sadness for many folks, particularly those residents living in the north side area neighborhood associations. These people are a tightly knit community who enjoy the walkability of the nearby shops, the Scotts grocery having been an integral part of these 4,000 households that make up this vibrant area.

The reinvestment in the North Clinton Scotts grocery store provides The Kroger Co. an opportunity to begin the reinvestment of its relationship with the neighborhood patrons who faithfully supported the North Anthony Scotts grocery store for six decades. And, to that end I have encouraged Kroger’s to be open and available to these neighborhoods and strongly consider their input as remodeling of North Clinton Scotts grocery begins.

Moving forward, the emphasis for the neighborhoods (Northside, North Anthony, New Kirkwood Park, Kirkwood Park, Forest Park Blvd, and Frances Slocum) and the city will be on redevelopment at the North Anthony Scotts location. I am pleased to participate in the reforming of the North Anthony Business Association and my continued support of the Rogers Company as we work to stabilize and expand this dynamic area.”
