News release from the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health:
Residents encouraged to participate in free hands-only CPR training July 18
On July 18th, 2012 the CPR Task Force of Fort Wayne and Allen County will once again bring FREE Hands-Only CPR Training to the annual Three Rivers Festival.
Each year, around 250 people in Fort Wayne and Allen County suffer out-of-hospital sudden death due to cardiac arrest. Many of these people could be saved if someone in their family or a bystander close to them only knew Hands-Only CPR. What if that was YOUR family member or friend? Would you know what to do? Could you save their life? You would know what to do and could very possibly save their life if you took only 45 minutes to complete this training!
Afraid to do CPR? Afraid it’s difficult to learn? Afraid of being sued? Here are some important facts!
[li]When properly trained, CPR is EASY to perform! It’s not difficult and easy to learn.[/li]
[li]Hands-Only CPR takes less than an hour to learn. Aren’t your family members and neighbors worth 45 minutes?[/li]
[li]You are protected from liability by Good Samaritan Laws when you do CPR trying to save someone’s life![/li]
The CPR Task Force, the Three Rivers Festival and Mayor Tom Henry invites anyone 12 or older to the next Don’t Miss a Beat training on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center, 233 W. Main St. The free 45-minute classes begin at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. as part of the Fort Wayne Newspapers Three Rivers Festival. Registration is available on site.
At the Don’t Miss a Beat training, participants will use manikins or special kits to learn in about an hour how to perform compression CPR. Trained and experienced CPR instructors teach the classes and volunteer their time for this program.
The non-certified classes are open to anyone 12 or older and do not include a written test.

About the Three Rivers CPR Task Force
Since October of 2008, the City of Fort Wayne and Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, American Red Cross, Focus on Health, Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health, Parkview Health and Lutheran Health Network have been offering non-certified training. More than 1,100 people have been trained in the Don’t Miss a Beat program.Compression or hands-only CPR focuses on chest compressions only, no breaths, to keep blood moving in an adult victim whose heart has stopped beating. It has become increasingly popular in recent years, as research has shown it to be effective in helping to save lives.
