FWCS Named Riley Corporation for Raising Nearly $32,000
Fort Wayne Community Schools students and staff raised nearly $32,000 for Riley Children’s Foundation during the 2011-12 school year, earning the district the designation of Riley Corporation.
The district raised a total of $31,977 for the foundation, nearly $3,000 more than the district raised last year. Since 2008, FWCS has raised more than $125,000 for Riley.
“Our students and staff were incredibly generous this year,” said Haley Principal Rebecca Dennis, who organized the campaign for the district. “Even as many of our families struggle financially, they are willing to share what they have with others who are also in need. It is that great lesson that makes this effort worth it each and every year.”
Three-quarters of the schools met their goal of becoming aMiracleSchool, which means they raised at least $1 for every student in the building. Twenty-nine elementary schools, one intermediate school and five middle schools and two high schools reached their goal – the highest number of Miracle Schools ever for FWCS. Nine schools – Croninger, Forest Park, Harrison Hill, Holland and Price elementary schools, Towles Montessori Intermediate School, Miami Middle School and North Side and South Side high schools – raised more than $1,000 to support Riley.
Riley Children’s Foundation supports Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, CampRileyand the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home. AsIndiana’s only comprehensive hospital dedicated exclusively to the care of children, Riley Hospital has provided compassionate care, support and comfort to children and their families since 1924. Each year children from all 92 Indiana counties turn to Riley Hospital and its regional clinics throughout the state more than 350,000 times. Riley Hospital’s partnership with Indiana University Health and its strong affiliation with the Indiana University School of Medicine make Riley Hospital the leader in pediatric care in the state and the region.
Each year families fromAllenCountyturn to Riley for care nearly 4,000 times; families fromNortheast Indianavisit Riley nearly 9,000 times. Many of these children are also being treated at either Parkview or Lutheran facilities, and their doctors inAllenCountywork closely with Riley doctors. Of the appointments fromAllenCounty, 182 are inpatients visits and 3,849 are outpatient visits. When students help Riley, they are helping their friends and classmates.
The schools earning Miracle Status are: Bunche and Whitney Young early childhood centers, Abbett, Adams, Arlington, Bloomingdale, Brentwood, Croninger, Fairfield, Forest Park, Franke Park, Glenwood Park, Haley, Harris, Harrison Hill, Holland, Indian Village, Irwin, Lindley, Nebraska, Price, Scott, South Wayne, St. Joseph Central, Study, Washington, Washington Center, Waynedale and Weisser Park elementary schools, Towles Montessori Intermediate School, Kekionga, Memorial Park, Miami, Northwood and Portage middle schools and North Side and South Side high schools.
