Ivy Tech Community College President to serve on national workforce panel
Thomas J. Snyder to discuss how businesses can engage with higher education

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Thomas J. Snyder, President of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, will serve on a panel today hosted by the Institute for a Competitive Workforce (ICW), an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, as it releases the third edition of their Leaders & Laggards report series. This year’s report, A State-by-State Report Card on Public Postsecondary Education, analyzes how state public higher education systems are performing in areas such as return on investment and transparency, as well as whether states have policies and incentives in place to promote reform and innovation.

ICW will formally present the report today at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. The day’s event will include a keynote address by Margaret Spellings, President of the Chamber’s Forum for Policy Innovation and former U.S. Secretary of Education, followed by a panel discussion regarding the report’s findings.

Snyder will participate in a panel discussion about the critical role of higher education and the potential impact of the report from the business community’s perspective. The panel will also discuss how the business community could engage in higher education, and why their involvement is so important. In addition to Snyder, Bill Hammond, President and CEO of the Texas Association of Business; and Susan Pareigis, President of the Florida Council of 100, will participate in the panel discussion.

A key highlight of the report is the focus on American employers and their increasing struggle to find the talent they need to grow the nation’s economy. The report also touches on the increasing cost of college tuition and how students, employers and policymakers alike have all begun to question how efficiently and effectively the nation’s institutions of higher education are utilizing the resources made available to them. Additionally, the report will include recommendations for what states can do to improve in these areas.

The event will be moderated by Scott Jaschik, Editor and Co-Founder of Inside Higher Ed. Closing remarks will be made by Cheryl Oldham, Vice President of ICW.
