Democratic Convention Sparks Regional Activism

(June 11, 2012) – The Indiana Democratic Party is hosting its State Convention in Fort Wayne this Thursday through Saturday, and the Democratic base across the 12 Counties of the Third Congressional District is fired up about it.

In total, the Northeast Indiana region will send about 220 State Delegates to the official business meeting occurring on Saturday, which will officially nominate Vi Simpson for Lt. Governor, a Superintendent of Public Instruction, and an Attorney General. Many local Democrats will also participate as credentialed guests.

16 people are running for National Delegate from the Third District. The National Convention will occur in September in North Carolina. Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry has been appointed as one of the Elected Official Delegates.

“The amount of participation from local Democrats has been outstanding, from both a Delegate and a Volunteer standpoint. The idea to rotate the Convention to various locations around the State has proven to activate the Democratic base. We will carry this momentum through the election cycle and into November,” said Carmen Darland.

Volunteers and activists are running and participating in events on Thursday and Friday, including an Associated Churches Food Bank Community Service Project, Old Fort Demonstrations, a Made in America Display, and Zach Wahls Live at the Embassy. All of these events are free and open to the public, coordinated by the Fort Wayne 2012 Committee.

The events related to the Democratic Convention are estimated to have a local economic development impact of just under $500,000.
“The Democrats of Northeastern Indiana are ready for the 2012 election,” said Darland.

Public Event Schedule – All Events are Free and Open to the Public:

Friday at 9 a.m. – Old Fort Demonstrations at the Old Fort Museum

Friday at 3 p.m. – Made in America / Northeastern Indiana Showcase at the Embassy Theater

Friday at 8 p.m. – Zach Wahls Live at the Embassy Theater
