USF students earn $5,000 grant, national leadership award
Representatives of the Physician Assistant Student Society at the University of Saint Francis (USF PASS) received free travel to Dallas May 30 to accept a Student Leadership Award and $5,000 grant from the Jenzabar Foundation to continue their work in Haiti. The Jenzabar Foundation issues grants to institutions of higher education and other non-profit organizations to promote recipients’ activities within their communities and on a global level.
In March 2011, USF PASS members traveled to Haiti during spring break of their clinical year to provide medical services through free healthcare clinics. Over 1,000 patients were assessed, evaluated and treated in four days at the makeshift clinic. Through the established Haiti Outreach Ministries, a permanent clinic was organized to create continuity of care for the Haitian people. In March of 2012, a USF PASS group of 15 again traveled to Haiti to provide free medical clinics/care, establishing what will be an annual program for PASS participants.
The Dallas event recognized five student-led campus groups who have made significant contributions to better the world outside of their colleges and universities. The winners exemplified a commitment to making a difference in a local, national or international community through ongoing activities or the completion of a project during the 2011-2012 academic year. USF was one of 10 schools selected from over 400 for the honor and grant.
“Every year we hold the annual Student Leadership Awards ceremony to honor inspiring students committed to making our communities a better place, and who are role models to their peer students,” said Bob Maginn, chairman of the Jenzabar Foundation. “These students have a strong passion for community service and we are honored to present them with these awards to recognize their outstanding work and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.”
The foundation, established by Jenzabar Inc., awarded the student groups based on their impact and mission; involvement on campus and in the community; and the potential for other institutions to emulate their model of service.
Proceeds from a garage sale this weekend will benefit USF PASS, with a portion dedicated to the medical mission trip to Haiti in 2013. The sale will be in the North Campus parking lot from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. A large selection of items, including a university gift of seven sets of Syracuse China from the 1950s, furniture, clothes, electronics and other items will be for sale.
