Science Central Cuts Ribbon on Mars in 3-D
Science Central to open their newest traveling exhibition, Mars in 3-D, on Tuesday, June 19 with a ribbon-cutting at 11:00 am. Speakers will include Deputy Mayor Mark Becker, State Representative Win Moses, and Mars Researcher Ulrich Koehler from the German Aerospace Center. Free admission ALL DAY to celebrate the opening.
“We have been in communication with the German Space Center for about 4 years to get the Mars Exhibition here. What really excites me is that Science Central is the kick-off site for the exhibition as it begins its US tour!” stated Martin S. Fisher, Science Central Executive Director.
“Mars is such a fascinating planet. Early in the solar system there were more similarities with Earth, but then the evolution of the planet went into a different direction. There was plenty of water on Mars, but the questions are: where is it today? Was Mars ever able to host life? To find out whether there was, or still is, life existent elsewhere in the solar system is one of the key tasks in science of this century.” stated Uli Koehler, planetary geologist with the Institute of Planetary Research of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and designer of the exhibition.
The European Space Agency’s Mars Express space probe is Europe’s first mission to another planet. Since 2004, a stereo camera designed and built by Germany’s space agency, the German Aerospace Center, has been mapping the Red Planet and producing colorful, high resolution images. Six natural forces that have significantly formed Mars over billions of years – volcanism, water, ice, erosion, wind, and tectonics – are the focus of the exhibition. Suspended throughout the exhibition are enormous photographs, and with the help of red-blue glasses, visitors will see Mars like they have never been able to before – in 3-D! These images have bilingual interpretive signs in English and German with a vast amount of information about the Red Planet, its moons and exploration efforts. The Mars exhibition was developed by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR).
