Lecture by Jim Sack: George Kessler & the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1911, the Father of Fort Wayne Parks, David Foster, brought famed urban landscaper George Kessler to our city to design a groundbreaking park and boulevard system. George Kessler, was born near Gera, brought to the US by his family, but returned to eastern Germany for his education in landscape and design. Kessler was fully imbued with the fundamentals of progressive German landscape theory and applied it all over America. Our park and boulevard system, introduced in 1912 is a legacy of his foresighted creativity. Now, 100 years later there is renewed interest and support for continuing the plan with systematic development of the city riverfront and enhancements to each of Kessler’s broad boulevards.
