News release from Congressman Marlin Stutzman:

Stutzman Votes to Outlaw Sex-Selection Abortions

(Washington, D.C.) – After the House failed to pass the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, Congressman Marlin Stutzman (IN-03) issued the following statement.

“I am incredibly disappointed that the President’s party decided to side with the abortion lobby instead of agreeing to common sense protections,” said Stutzman. “This legislation would have outlawed abortions performed solely on the basis of the child’s sex, the practice of ‘gendercide’ that is prevalent in countries like China. Today, the powerful pro-abortion lobby made it clear that they put a higher value on limitless access to abortions than women’s rights. In a country that believes in equality, both sides of the aisle should have come together to say that sex-selection abortions are wrong. The unborn are the most vulnerable members of our society and I will continue to do everything in my power to defend them.”

Congressman Stutzman voted in favor of H.R. 3541, the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, as it failed passing the House by a 246-168 vote (a two-thirds majority was required).

In 2008, a report by researchers at Columbia University found that there is “clear evidence of sex-selection most likely at the prenatal stage” here in the United States. H.R. 3541, the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, would ban sex-selection abortion. The victims of sex-selection are overwhelmingly females.

The medical community, including the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, and the President’s Council on Bioethics, has condemned the practice of sex-selection. Although the U.S. has condemned the practice around the world, no law prohibits it domestically.

Congressman Stutzman represents the 3rd Congressional District of Indiana and serves on the House Committee on Agriculture, the House Committee on the Budget and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity. Indiana’s 3rd District contains all of DeKalb, Kosciusko, Lagrange, Noble, Steuben, and Whitley counties, as well as parts of Allen and Elkhart counties. Official website.
