Schools Honor Students Moving to New Levels
Students across Fort Wayne Community Schools will be recognized over the next few days for reaching a milestone in their educational careers, whether at elementary, middle or high school.
Schools will say good-bye to their fifth- and eighth-graders in recognition, culmination and award ceremonies. The ceremonies honor the work the students have accomplished in their current schools and celebrate the good things to come in their new schools. Many schools also celebrate the successful completion of kindergarten, which for many students means finishing their first year of school.
High schools also have special events to wrap up the year honoring students who have worked hard. Even adult learners are celebrated during the Continuing Education ELL Graduation, an annual celebration of adults working to master the English language.
Following is a list of the ceremonies happening before the end of the school year. All events are at the school unless otherwise listed.
June 1
South Side High School celebrates Ivy Day at 8 a.m. The traditional ceremony includes a procession by the seniors to symbolize moving on and the planting of ivy.
June 4
Fairfield Elementary,2825 Fairfield Ave., will have its fifth-grade completion and recognition ceremony at 10:20 a.m. Students will be honored for exemplary attendance and citizenship as well as academic achievement. At 2 p.m., kindergarten students will be celebrated with end-of-the-year awards distributed.
Adults learning English will be celebrated at the annual Continuing Education the English Literacy Certificate Ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at Anthis Career Center,1200 S. Barr St. This year, the program served 322 students from 41 countries. Students who made progress in mastering English will be honored during the ceremony. Students’ abilities range from mastering basic English language skills, such as recognizing and writing the alphabet, to mastering enough of the language to meet most survival needs and social demands. Students participating in the ceremony often wear their native dress.
Indian Village Elementary School, 3835 Wenonah Lane, will have its fifth-grade culmination ceremony at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony includes a slide show of the fifth-graders throughout the school year. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Media Center.
Maplewood Elementary,2200 Maplewood Road, will have its end-of-the-year fifth-grade celebration at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony will include representatives from STARBASE, a U.S. Department of Defense program students have participated in this year. The program focuses on sparking students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math at a young age.
Franke Park Elementary, 828 Mildred Ave., will honor fifth-grade students during an awards night at 6 p.m. Students will be recognized for their outstanding achievements.
Forest Park Elementary will have its fifth-grade recognition event at 7 p.m. in the North Side High School Auditorium, 475 E. State Blvd. The school will recognize the many achievements of the fifth-grade class with awards distributed.
June 5
Jefferson Middle School, 5303 Wheelock Road, will honor eighth-graders at a special breakfast at 8 a.m.
Price Elementary, 1901 W. State Blvd., will honor fifth-graders at a completion ceremony at 9:15 a.m. After the ceremony, PTA will provide a pizza lunch.Weisser Park Elementary, 902 Colerick St., will have a fifth-grade recognition program at 9:15 a.m. Students will be recognized for their achievements and special entertainment will be provided by the choirs and fourth- and fifth-grade band. After the program, fifth-graders will go bowling.
Irwin Elementary, 3501 S. Anthony Blvd., will have its annual award ceremony at 9:25 a.m. followed by the fifth-grade luncheon where students and parents will share a catered meal at a local park and give their rockets a water-propelled maiden voyage.
Lindley International Spanish Academy will celebrate kindergarten students at a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Fifth-graders at be honored at 1:30 p.m. with students receiving awards during a recognition ceremony.
Harrison Hill Elementary, 355 Cornell Circle, will honor kindergarteners at a celebration at 9:30 a.m. where students will receive a certificate of completion. The fifth-grade celebration will begin 10:30 a.m. Students will receive a certificate of completion, and other awards will be distributed.
Washington Center Elementary, 1936 W. Wallen Road, will have a fifth-grade recognition ceremony at 1 p.m.
Harris Elementary will have an awards program for fifth-graders at 6:30 p.m. at Snider High School, 4600 Fairlawn Pass. The awards will last about an hour, followed by a dance for students at 8 p.m.
June 6
Wayne High School, 9100 Winchester Road, will have a breakfast for graduating seniors at 8 a.m.
