News release from the Headwaters Park Alliance:

Headwaters Park Ice Rink to stay open through March 4

The Headwaters Park outdoor ice skating rink, originally scheduled to close for the season on February 26, will remain open for one additional week. The rink will wrap up its ninth season on Sunday March 4 at 8 PM.

“The rink is enjoying another great season. Because of a mild winter, our skating numbers are stronger than normal. There is demand for more ice time, and we will remain open an additional week this year,” said Geoff Paddock, Executive Director of the Headwaters Park Alliance.

“This year, we are poised to break our previous record of 25,246 skaters, achieved two years ago during the 2009-2010 season,” Paddock said. “This is the only outdoor ice rink within 100 miles or so of Fort Wayne. We are getting record crowds this year, and people want to continue skating for a few more days,” Paddock said.

Through Sunday, February 19, just over 24,000 individuals had skated since the rink opened for its ninth season on November 18. With about two weeks to go, this year’s skaters could surpass the record achieved two years ago.

“We are asking people to come out the next twelve days and help us shatter this previous record,” Paddock said. The rink will be open from 1 PM to 8 PM Monday through Thursday and from Noon to 10 PM on Friday and Saturdays and from Noon to 8 PM on the next two Sundays. However, the rink will have to close on March 4. It takes over 4 weeks to let the ice thaw and to dismantle and store the rink until next season. Events under the Lincoln Pavilion, located on the east festival plaza of Headwaters Park, begin in April.

Since the rink opened in November 2003, about 188,000 skaters have enjoyed the rink over nine seasons.
