USF planetarium announces WinterFest III weekend events
(February 13, 2012) – The University of Saint Francis and the Edwin Clark Schouweiler Memorial Planetarium open WinterFest III Friday with a weekend of music laser light shows.
Friday and Saturday shows are at 5, 7, 8 and 9 p.m., and will combine laser lights with music by Metallica, Van Halen, Queen, Celine Dion, Sting, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd and many others, including a piece by Weird Al Yankovic. Each of the eight shows feature different play lists. For specific artist play lists, consult the Schouweiler Planetarium website.
All seats are $5. Ticket sales begin 45 minutes prior to the first show of the day. Planetarium seating is limited. When the show is sold out, tickets will go on sale for the next available show on that day.
Two Sunday afternoon family matinee laser shows for children, “Legends of the Night Sky,” will present the ancient stories associated with constellations. The constellation of Orion will entertain at 2 p.m., while the stories of Perseus and Andromeda will entertain at 3 p.m.
Tickets for “Legends of the Night Sky” are $4, with a maximum of $18 per family (two adults and children).
WinterFest III continues Feb. 24-26 with A Hawaiian Weekend. The planetarium staff invites visitors to escape winter and join them for one or more of their “Explorers” shows.
“The Explorers of Polynesia” will be Friday at 7:30 p.m., while “The Explorers of Mauna Kea” and “The Explorers of the International Space Station” will be Sunday at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
Visitors should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to show time to purchase tickets. Early arrivals will be seated in the adjacent auditorium until the show starts in the planetarium. All shows include a formal multi-media show and a staff-led tour of the night sky.
Allow 90 minutes for planetarium show experiences. Tickets for the individual shows are $4 for adults, $3 for children under 18 and $3 for senior citizens, with a maximum of $14 per family. University students with IDs are $1.
On Saturday, Feb. 25, an event with seating limited to 40 will be offered through paid advance reservations. “A Night in the Tropics” will include all three “Explorers” shows with Hawaiian inspired food and dinner. Tickets will be offered on a first come, first served basis with a deadline of 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21.
