City joins with Urban League to host job fair in Renaissance Pointe on January 11th
Local residents urged to apply for vast array of job opportunities(January 9, 2012) – The City of Fort Wayne is working in partnership with several area non-profit employment development partners and Employment Plus, an Indiana-based minority-owned job placement agency, to host a job fair this Wednesday, Jan. 11. The event will be held at the Fort Wayne Urban League, 2135 S. Hanna St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
City residents are invited to attend in order to learn about job opportunities in both construction-related fields and non-construction arenas, as developers continue work on housing initiatives in the Renaissance Pointe neighborhood and in various areas throughout Fort Wayne.
Last fall, developer Kevan Biggs and Biggs TC Development began construction on an $11.6 million initiative to build 66 rent-to-lease homes in the Renaissance Pointe neighborhood. Work on those homes is expected to continue through August.
Those with experience, skills or some training and/or who are licensed in plumbing, electrical work, concrete crews or CDL driving are encouraged to attend the job fair to find out about an immediate need to fill such positions. Opportunities exist for both skilled and unskilled candidates, as some employers will offer on-the-job experience/training.
Job fair coordinators emphasize that the event is not just for construction-related positions. All Fort Wayne and Allen County residents seeking employment opportunities are urged to attend.
The job fair is being held as part of a City of Fort Wayne Employment Initiative — coordinated through the City’s Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services — that aims to increase job prospects and reduce barriers to long-term employment for low-income residents throughout Allen County. The plan also seeks to increase business opportunities and reduce and eliminate barriers for small, minority and women-owned businesses and labor surplus firms.
City officials will use information gleaned from the job fair to partner with Employment Plus and Biggs TC to create a list of workforce development needs, said Heather Presley-Cowen, deputy director of Community Development. The City will then work with training providers to deliver the training needed to prepare workers for unfilled jobs or future jobs.
Participants are asked to bring their resume, list of references and identification with them to the job fair. Representatives from Biggs Property Management, Employment Plus & Construction Staffing, the City of Fort Wayne and others will be on hand to conduct interviews and provide information.
The other groups working with the City and the Urban League to host the job fair include Genesis Outreach, Inc.; Vincent Village, Inc.; the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office; the Labor Union; Industrial Training Solutions; Who Can I Can; The Rescue Mission; Blue Jacket; the Fort Wayne Housing Authority; Catherine Kasper Place and the V.A.
