Guyott: Ohio election result sends signal to Indiana lawmakers

(INDIANAPOLIS, November 9, 2011) – Following the rejection by voters of a collective bargaining ban in Ohio yesterday, Indiana State AFL-CIO President Nancy Guyott released the following statement this morning:

“Yesterday the citizens of Ohio resoundingly vetoed legislation that would have taken collective bargaining rights away from teachers, firefighters and first responders – sending another clear message that Americans have had enough of these radical attacks on working people.

Our neighbors in Ohio marched to the polls to demand politicians like Ohio Gov. John Kasich stop the partisan attacks. And, despite millions of dollars spent by corporate funded special interest groups, voters rejected the notion that the 99 percent – nurses, bridge inspectors, firefighters, and social workers – caused the economic collapse, rather than Wall Street.

The result in the Ohio election should serve as a wake-up call to all the members of the Indiana General Assembly who are thinking about renewing their assault on Indiana’s working families. Ohioans didn’t stand for it and neither will Hoosiers.”

The Indiana State AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations) is a federation of 800 local unions across the state belonging to 50 International Unions. In total, the Indiana State AFL-CIO represents more than 300,000 working Hoosiers.
