Lugar partners with area businesses for Helping the Hungry Food Drive

News release from US Senator Dick Lugar:

Lugar Partners with Area Businesses for Helping the Hungry Food Drive

(August 31, 2011) – Sen. Dick Lugar today announced his partnership with Covington Plaza and Covington Bar and Grill for the Helping the Hungry fall food drive held September 1 through November 18.

“During these tough economic times, many families are facing the fear of not having food on the table each day,” said Lugar. “It is crucial for Hoosiers to donate to food banks year round. I am pleased to partner with Covington Bar and Grill, and Covington Plaza once again to fight hunger throughout Northeast Indiana.”

The seasonal food drive benefits the Community Harvest Food Bank, the largest hunger relief organizations in Northeast Indiana. Community Harvest Food Bank distributes more than ten million pounds of food annually.

Participants may drop off non-perishable food items at Senator Lugar’s Northeast Indiana Community Service Center, Covington Bar and Grill or in designated bins throughout Covington Plaza. Monetary donations are also accepted through the Northeast Indiana Community Service Center. Checks must be made payable to Community Harvest Food Bank.

September is National Hunger Action Month. This year marks Lugar’s third year partnering with Kroger, Marsh and Walmart for the Hoosiers Fighting Hunger state-wide food drive. Since 2009, the Hoosiers Fighting Hunger Food Drive has collected more than one million pounds of food for Hoosiers, equaling more than 782,000 meals.

In 2009, Lugar reintroduced the Good Samaritan Hunger Relief Tax Incentive Extension Actto make permanent provisions that allow farmers and small business owners to receive a tax deduction for donating food products to food banks, pantries and homeless shelters. Provisions of this bill were temporarily extended in the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, but have since expired.

Lugar is also an inaugural member of the Senate Hunger Caucus, which provides a forum for Senators to discuss and debate important hunger issues facing the United States and the rest of our world.
