News release from the Friends of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana:

Lincoln scholar and biographer to speak at McMurtry Lecture

Dr. Ronald C. White, Jr., a New York Times best selling author on President Abraham Lincoln, will be the annual keynote speaker at the 2011 R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture. This year’s lecture will be held in the Lower Level Theater of the Allen County Public Library, 900 Library Plaza, on Friday September 9 at 7:00 PM. White will speak on “I am almost ready to say…” Abraham Lincoln’s Diary.

Dr. White earned a Ph.D. in Religion and History from Princeton University and is a fellow at the Huntington Library. He has lectured at the White House and been interviewed on the PBS News Hour. He is also currently working on a biography of President Ulysses S. Grant.

White is the author of A. Lincoln: A Biography (2009), a New York Times best seller. USA Today said in 2009, “If you read one book about Lincoln, make it A. Lincoln.” The book also received a Christopher Award honoring authors “whose work affirms the highest values of the human spirit.” Dr. White is also the author of Lincoln’s Greatest Speech: The Second Inaugural (2002), a New York Times Notable Book, and the Eloquent President: A Portrait of Lincoln Through His Words (2005). This was a selection of the Book of the Month Club.

Dr. White will attend a brown bag (bring your own) lunch at the Allen County Public Library on September 9 at 11:30. He will present a paper titled: Lincoln’s Farewell Address at Springfield. Media is invited to attend. Following lunch, he will be given a tour and briefing of the library’s digitization process. He will also attend other events that afternoon and a dinner with supporters and board members of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana. He will then present the McMurtry Lecture at 7:00 PM in the Theater.

The annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture is presented by the Friends of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana and the Friends of the Allen County Public Library. This year’s sponsors of the brown bag lunch and the reception, after the lecture, are Hannah and Al Zacher. Admission into the lecture is free, and a post lecture reception will be held at the library.
