Representative Marlin Stutzman (R-3-IN) to Meet with Fort Wayne-Area Cancer Survivors and Physicians at Newly-Accredited SW Radiation Oncology Center; Witness Excellence in Cancer Treatment
Local Cancer Care Facility Showcases Commitment to Quality Assurance and Radiation Therapy Safety(August 11, 2011) – Representative Marlin Stutzman (R-3-IN) today toured SW Radiation Oncology Center, a local free-standing radiation therapy center that recently earned accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR) and The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) – a significant process and investment that provides assurance of the highest quality of care and patient safety procedures.
“I am pleased to have the opportunity to tour SW Radiation Oncology Center and meet with some of the local constituents and cancer care staff that are providing excellent, first class care right here in our community,” said Representative Stutzman. “The steps that this facility has taken to earn the ACR/ASTRO accreditation offer patients an added peace of mind that allows them to focus on their health and feel certain that they are receiving highest quality of care.”
The ACR-ASTRO accreditation is awarded to facilities that demonstrate the highest practice standards as determined by expert board-certified radiologists and medical physicists. Patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed.
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services. ASTRO is a professional organization serving more than 10,000 radiation oncologists, medical physicists and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of cancer patients.
“We are honored to welcome Representative Stutzman to our facility today to meet with our patients and dedicated care giving staff,” said Dr. John Crawford, a radiation oncologist at SW Radiation Oncology Center. “We are proud to demonstrate the quality of care that our facility is providing to hundreds of patients each year and look forward to working with Representative Stutzman in the future to ensure that Fort Wayne-area patients continue to have access to quality, state-of-the-art care right here in our community.”
Radiation therapy is one of the three most commonly used cancer treatments along with surgery and chemotherapy. Today, approximately 50 to 60 percent of cancer patients are treated with radiation at some time during their course of care, and this critical therapy applied through the latest advanced technology is greatly improving patient outcomes.
SW Radiation Oncology Center provides more than 16,236 treatments annually, and last year treated more than 656 patients with prostate, breast and lung cancers and other life-threatening diseases by using various treatment modalities including high dose brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, intensity modulated radiation therapy and prostate seed impants. SW Radiation Oncology Center is a part of Radiation Oncology Associates, P.C., the largest radiation oncology practice in NE Indiana, providing physician services for Parkview Hospital, VA Hospital and other surrounding community hospitals.
