FWCS employees pack 200 backpacks for students

(August 10, 2011) – Two hundred students will start the 2011-12 school year with a backpack full of new supplies from Fort Wayne Community Schools employees.

Several FWCS employees will spend Friday morning packing backpacks with pencils, rulers, personal hygiene products and other necessities. This is the 18th year the employees in the Grile Administrative Center, North Transportation, Nutrition Services and Maintenance & Operations have put the bags together for FWCS students.

The majority of the bags and supplies are purchased with money raised throughout the year by employees who make a donation each week to dress down on Casual Day Fridays.

This year, the project also received significant contributions from Do it Best Corp., Robinson Chapel United Methodist Church, Star Financial Bank, Target, Office Max and ENT Associates (Ear, Nose & Throat).

After the bags are packed on Friday, they will be given to elementary school case managers, who will work with principals to distribute them discreetly to students in need. Those needing assistance with school supplies should contact staff at their child’s school. FWCS also works with a number of other outside organizations to assist our many students in need.
