Ivy Tech approved to expand degree offerings
(INDIANAPOLIS, June 22, 2011) – The Indiana Commission for Higher Education (CHE) has approved Ivy Tech Community College to offer new HVAC, Dental Assisting, Engineering Technology, and Pre Engineering degrees at select Ivy Tech campuses.
The Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) degree will now be offered as a certificate, Technical Certificate and Associate of Applied Science at campuses in Valparaiso, South Bend, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Terre Haute, Indianapolis, Evansville, and Bloomington. The new degree will consist of existing courses and one new capstone course.
The HVAC program will prepare students to become qualified technicians in all residential and light commercial heating, cooling, and refrigeration. Graduates will be able to work for area employers, or as self employed technicians. Students will learn to design, plan, install, and operate building heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. The existing HVAC program at Ivy Tech offers an Associate Degree in Industrial Technology or Construction Technology with a concentration in HVAC. The new program will allow for a specialized A.A.S degree in the field of HVAC itself.
Also approved was the Technical Certificate for the Dental Assisting program at South Bend. Currently the South Bend campus offers an Associate of Science degree in Dental Hygiene.
A Pre-Engineering Associate of Science degree was approved to be offered at the South Bend, Fort Wayne, Warsaw, and Indianapolis campuses. Each campus hopes to have between 30-80 people enrolled in the Pre-Engineering program each year. Graduates can transfer their degree to other universities in Indiana to continue their education in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree.
The CHE also approved the Associate of Science degree in Engineering Technology for the Valparaiso, Fort Wayne, Warsaw, and Sellersburg campuses. The Engineering Technology program educates students to be technicians who will work with engineers to help design, implement, and support engineering processes. Students will learn and develop basic and advanced skills in science, engineering, technology and math.
