Senior German Parliamentary staff member from Berlin to speak

Thomas Helm, a senior staff member to German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s majority coalition in the Bundestag (German Parliament) will make remarks at Park Edelweiss, 3355 Elmhurst Drive, on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited.

An experienced hand in European politics, Thomas Helm has been a senior staff member to the center-right Christian Democrat Union/Christian Social Union group in the German Bundestag. His main responsibilities have included oversight of intelligence-gathering, counter-terrorism, immigration and Muslim interrogation policies. From 2007-2009, he was the official in charge of a special committee to restructure the financial relations between the German States and the Federal Government of Germany.

Helm can address the financial crisis triggered by Greece, drifting near bankruptcy due to years of government deficit-spending. Many analysts worry that the response to the crisis compounds the danger posed to the Euro as a trusted currency and the European Union itself.

The president of the German Heritage Society, Ken Scheibenberger, is proud to have a speaker of such renown in Germany to speak in Fort Wayne. “Many of the policies he has worked on are similar to those faced by the United States and Thomas’ insights could be valuable to us.”

His speech is sponsored by the German Heritage Society, the Fort Wayne Maennerchor/Damenchor, and the Germanna Foundation, the memorial foundation of the German Colonies in Virginia.
