IPFW announces Inaugural Applied Leadership Series

News release from IPFW:

IPFW Announces Inaugural Applied Leadership Series

(April 12, 2011) – Winston Churchill once said, “Leadership is not knowing what to do, it is knowing what to do next.” That is a major
tenet of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne’s (IPFW’s) Applied Leadership Series, which offers its inaugural program Monday through Friday, May 16-20, 2011. The Series is co-sponsored by IPFW’s Divisions of Continuing Studies (DCS) and Organizational Leadership and Supervision (OLS).

“The IPFW Applied Leadership Series has been designed and developed to give managers an opportunity to refine their leadership skills to
take charge of building a continuously improving organization. It is dedicated to helping managers build upon existing leadership abilities while learning about emerging issues in varied disciplines that have to be well understood to be successful in leading the way,” said Robert
Abel, project coordinator for the Series and a member of the OLS faculty.

The areas to be explored are designed to continuously advance a culture of high performance. These include:
[li]Reviewing the current economic climate[/li]
[li]Practicing key communication techniques[/li]
[li]Succession planning[/li]
[li]Managing demographic shifts and workforce effectiveness[/li]
[li]Understanding developing legal and ethical issues[/li]
[li]Leveraging social capital[/li]
[li]Establishing innovation and entrepreneurship[/li]
Abel says the Series is a rich assembly of content and expertise. “The instructors are experts in their fields, and will offer a forum where  managers can learn new methods and techniques in each of these disciplines. The challenging yet condensed curriculum will use case studies, lecture, and application exercises to teach these topics. The small classes and collaborative environment help participants form a tight-knit network of industry peers.”

Instructors for the Series include a number of IPFW’s tenured and extended faculty as well as nationally and internationally recognized
leaders from area businesses.

The Series will be held in the Keith Busse Steel Dynamics Alumni Center, located across the street from the Holiday Inn at IPFW and the Coliseum on Paul Shaffer Drive.

Registration is now underway; however, the class size is limited. For information on registration and fees or to register, contact the Division of Continuing Studies at 260-481-6619. For more information on the Series, contact Abel at 260-482-6496, 574-453-8761, or abelr@ipfw.edu.
