News release from The History Center:

May’s George R. Mather Lecture focuses on local abolitionist Alexander T. Rankin

The May 1 George R. Mather Lecture at the History Center will feature Angie Quinn speaking on “‘Fearless Champion of the Oppressed, and the Advocate of the Slaves’ :the Story of Alexander T. Rankin”. The 2 p.m. lecture is free and open to the public. The History Center is located at 302 East Berry, Fort Wayne.

Angie Quinn began work as ARCH’s executive director in 1996 and wrote the National Register nomination for the Alexander T. Rankin house, serving as the project manager for its restoration.

Hugh McCulloch, the Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln and Fort Wayne attorney, described The Rev. Alexander T. Rankin as having “the right kind of material for an abolitionist.” Rankin was a nationally known minister and abolitionist.

In conjunction with the lecture, a tour of the Rankin house will begin immediately after the lecture. ARCH acquired the property on Lafayette Street in Fort Wayne between Wayne and Berry to restore and convert to their headquarters. The free tour will be one of the events taking place locally during National Historic Preservation Month.
