Lutheran Hospital Encourages Organ and Tissue Donation with Special Guests
Liver Donor Family and Recipient Share Personal Experiences(April 20, 2011) – Each April Lutheran Hospital’s donor council hosts an awareness drive to register organ and tissue donors and to answer questions about the lifesaving decision to donate. In addition to the donor drive, two women will share how they became forever united through one son’s tragedy that saved the other woman’s life. Mary England, donor mother, and Debie Switalski, liver donor recipient, will speak and be available to answer questions at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, near the Treehouse Café just south of the treehouse elevator in Lutheran Hospital’s main lobby.
Representatives from Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, Indiana Lion’s Eye Tissue and Transplant Bank, Lutheran’s donor council and other organ and tissue donors and recipients will have displays set-up from 7 to 9 a.m. and again from 11 to 1:30 p.m. with general information about registering to become a tissue and organ donor. The tables will be located in high traffic areas of the hospital including the cafeteria, south lobby walkway and the Treehouse Café.
“There are so many amazing stories from both donor families and recipients,” said Melissa Miller, RN, clinical educator, medical surgical intensive care and donor council president, Lutheran Hospital. “It is less common to have them sharing their story together with the goal of improving awareness of donation and transplantation.”
