Ivy Tech Community College online enrollment soars to nearly 80,000 students, school launches Ivy Tech Online

(INDIANAPOLIS) – Ivy Tech Community College announced it will streamline its online offerings and rename its distance education program Ivy Tech Online. Ivy Tech provides more online courses than any other college in the state of Indiana, and its online student enrollment has more than doubled in the last two years, growing from just 32,728 in 2008-09 to 79,123 in 2010-11. The nearly 80,000 students occupied over 211,000 seats in distance education classes this past year.

Recently, the college named former Chancellor of the Wabash Valley Region, Dr. Jeff Pittman, as Vice Provost of Online Education. He had been serving a dual role of Vice Provost and Chancellor for the past two years. With the recent growth of online learning, the college asked Pittman to focus his attention solely on efforts to further expand distance education. Under his statewide leadership of Ivy Tech Online enrollment has doubled.

“The rebranding of Ivy Tech’s online course offerings not only provides a new name, but will also provide a seamless system of online course offerings to students,” said Ivy Tech President Thomas J. Snyder. “With the growing number of adult students needing further education and new job training, the need for distance education has never been greater. With Ivy Tech Online, students will be able to access online course offerings from any Ivy Tech campus and complete their degree at their own pace and at the time most convenient for them.”

Ivy Tech Online will encompass more than 350 online classes and 12 degree programs that can be completed online. Those degree programs include Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Design Technology, Early Childhood Education, General Studies, Human Services, Library Technical Assistant, Manufacturing Production and Operations, Office Administration, and Paralegal Studies.

Ivy Tech began offering online courses in 1999 with 1,865 students enrolled statewide. The top three Ivy Tech Online programs with the most students enrolled are General Studies, Human Services and Criminal Justice.

Ivy Tech Community College is the state’s largest public postsecondary institution and the nation’s largest singly accredited statewide community college system serving nearly 200,000 students annually. Ivy Tech has campuses throughout Indiana. It serves as the state’s engine of workforce development, offering affordable degree programs and training that are aligned with the needs of its community along with courses and programs that transfer to other colleges and universities in Indiana. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association.
