Reception honoring Harriet Miller for receiving the Torchbearer Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indiana Commission for Women

Harriet Sweedler Miller was founding mother and first Executive Director of Ft Wayne Women’s Bureau in 1976. During her 17 years at the Women’s Bureau’s helm, Harriet confronted many challenges on behalf of women in the FW region. She and Monica Wehrle created “run, jane, run”, the Women’s Bureau’s multi-sport event for amateur adult female athletes. By the mid 1980’s “run, jane, run” became an independent organization with national reach, expanding to 12 other women-serving agencies across the US.FWWB’s “run, jane, run” hosted the first and several subsequent reunions of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), which ultimately led to AAGPBLs induction into the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame.

Many of the women’s centers that were launched during the same time period have closed. Because of Harriet’s efforts, the FWWB continues to serve thousands of women with much needed services.

It is for these reasons and Harriet’s continued voice on behalf of women that Harriet was given the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Torchbearer Awards ceremony (sponsored by the Indiana Commission for Women) in Indianapolis on March 9. 2011.
