Free IRS Online Filing, Preparation Help Available As Income Tax Deadline Nears

(March 31, 2011) – With the 2011 tax season in its closing weeks, many Hoosiers are searching for quick, hassle-free ways to submit their federal income tax returns by April 18. IRS Free File gives nearly 100 million Americans free access to tax preparation software. The Federal initiative is also pairing with local offices to offer state tax help as the filing deadline quickly approaches.

What is Free File?

Free File is a no-cost, federal income tax preparation and electronic filing program for eligible taxpayers. The program was developed through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance – a group of tax software companies. Taxpayers earning less than $58,000 may complete their federal income tax returns using commercial online software provided by these companies.

IRS Free File guides taxpayers through a simple step-by-step process to filing their taxes. Taxpayers may visit the IRS website, www.IRS.gov, and click on the “Free File” icon. From there, users can search through a list of Free File Alliance companies and choose one that best fits their needs. Once taxpayers have selected a company, they will be transferred to a corresponding website to prepare and complete their federal income tax returns online.

What is the Free File Alliance?

Partnered with the IRS since 2003, the Free File Alliance helps low- and middle-income Americans prepare, complete and safely e-file their tax returns online. More than 30 million tax returns have been filed through the IRS Free File program. The Free File Alliance is a coalition of 19 industry-leading tax software companies.

Free File Alliance has partnered with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to provide further assistance to taxpayers who need additional help. Free File Alliance software is now available via self-assist kiosks at VITA sites across the United States. These locations allow additional tax preparation opportunities for individuals who are weary about completing their applications online. To participate in this program, an individual must earn under $30,000 with no dependents or less than $49,000 with dependents.

Below are locations for local VITA sites in Allen County. Taxpayers may receive assistance with both state and federal taxes, so be prepared to provide a photo ID and your Social Security number to begin the process. Appointments and availability are limited, so call to schedule a time for your free tax assistance.
