News release from the Fort Wayne Dance Collective:

2011 Indiana Dance Festival connects dancers, educators through workshops and performances

The Fort Wayne Dance Collective is excited to present the 3rd Indiana Dance Festival, April 1-3, 2011 downtown. The weekend-long event will attract dozens of dancers, dance educators, and wellness enthusiasts, at the professional, pre-professional, and student levels, from around the state and region. This will help to bring business to Fort Wayne, as we are running a weekend special with the downtown
Hilton hotel as well as showcasing local small businesses (Artlink, Firefly Coffee House, Toscani, etc.) and beautiful downtown Fort Wayne.

Previously held in 2006 and 2007, this year’s IDF will be bigger and better than ever, with 25 workshops in 5 different tracks: cultural dance (salsa, belly dance, African dance, hip-hop) technical dance (modern tech., rhythm tap, ballet, jazz), Dance for the Nontraditional Dancer (teaching dance to people with disabilities, Creative Movement for children) No Dance Clothes Required (skills necessary to run a dance organization-grant-writing basics, social media, Taiko drumming, Jenbe Afrikan drumming), and Wellness ( yoga, nutrition, injury prevention, Feldenkreis).

Headlining the weekend is a performance by Hubbard Street 2 at the Arts United Center April 1, at 8 p.m. part of the Hubbard Street Dance Company, an internationally renowned dance education and performance organization based in Chicago, IL. On April 2, the IDF is organizing the Indiana Dancers Showcase, featuring pieces performed by dance companies represented at the festival. Performances are planned by dancers from Indiana University, Ball State University, Motus Dance Theatre in Indianapolis, the New American Youth Ballet in Fort Wayne, IPFW and many others.

The mission of the Fort Wayne Dance Collective is to provide people of all ages and abilities a respectful environment to learn, collaborate and perform using movement, rhythm and language. Fort Wayne Dance Collective provides an alternative to commercial dance studios, exercise clubs and professional ballet training facilities while providing scholarship and work-study options for low-income families.
