Department Investigates Third Report of a Vehicle Stolen with Children Inside

Date/Time of Incident: March 10, 2011 / 9:44 p.m.
Location of Incident: 3500 S. Hanna, Marathon Gas Station
Victim: Female, age 38, Fort Wayne

The Fort Wayne Police Department is currently investigating a report of an attempted automobile theft with five children in the vehicle. A black-colored Chevy Ventura van was reportedly parked next to a pump on the lot of the gas station and was left running and unlocked with five children inside the vehicle. While the driver of the vehicle was inside the gas station, a male subject got into the mini-van and began to drive away with the children still inside.

When the victim saw her vehicle pulling away, she came outside and stepped in front of the van. The van stopped and the suspect exited the vehicle and fled the area on foot taking the victim’s purse with him. The children, ages 1 year through 11 years, were uninjured.

Suspect Description: Male black with a medium complexion, early twenties, 5’3″ – 5’5″, with a thin, muscular build. The suspect was last seen wearing a grey-hooded jacket and a mustard-colored hat.

This incident remains under investigation with the Fort Wayne Police Department, and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-STOP, (260) 436-7867.

This is the third such incident reported this week. The Fort Wayne Police Department reminds everyone to NEVER leave infants/small children unattended or alone in vehicles.
